From traffic congestion and aircraft noise to nightlife, concerts, and packed sports stadiums, city life comes with a constant soundtrack. While these sounds help create vibrant places to live and visit, regular exposure to high noise levels can also affect hearing over time.
To highlight where Americans are exposed to the most everyday noise, ReSound analyzed cities across a range of factors, including traffic congestion, aircraft noise, nightlife, music venues, major sports stadiums, population density, noise and light pollution, and the proportion of residents exposed to harmful environmental noise levels.
The findings offer a snapshot of where everyday noise exposure is greatest, helping to raise awareness of the environments where paying attention to your hearing may be especially important.
The Top 10 Noisest Cities in the US, Revealed
While every city has its own soundtrack, some expose residents to far more everyday noise than others. The rankings below reveal where these noise sources are most concentrated, highlighting the urban environments where hearing health deserves the greatest attention.
Each city was then given an overall score out of 80 to reveal the noisiest places in the country.
New York City tops the list
New York City claimed the title of America’s noisiest city, earning an overall score of 66.46 out of 80.
Nicknamed the city that never sleeps, New York is defined by its constant movement. From the rush of the subway and bumper-to-bumper traffic to Broadway shows, packed stadiums, and bustling streets, there’s always something happening.
The city topped the rankings for population density, with more than 8.8 million residents, and also led for entertainment, boasting 858 nightlife venues, 29 live music venues, 8 major sports stadiums, and an average aircraft noise level of 61 dB, one of the highest in the study.
Los Angeles follows closely behind
Los Angeles, California, ranked second with an overall score of 58.54 out of 80.
Home to Hollywood premieres, red-carpet events, and some of the country’s biggest sporting occasions, Los Angeles attracts millions of visitors every year. But behind the glamour is one of America’s busiest urban environments.
The city recorded the highest traffic congestion score in the study, alongside an average aircraft noise level of 59 dB. Add to that 333 nightlife venues, 23 live music venues, 7 major sports stadiums, and nearly 10% of residents exposed to transportation noise of 60 dB or more, and Los Angeles stands out as one of the country’s busiest soundscapes.
Chicago completes the top three
Rounding out the top three is Chicago, Illinois, with a total score of 49.08 out of 80.
Known for its legendary blues and jazz scene, passionate sports fans, and packed summer festival calendar, Chicago has long been one of America’s cultural capitals.
The city is home to 484 nightlife venues, 25 live music venues, and six major sports stadiums. It also recorded the highest proportion of residents exposed to transportation noise of 60 dB or higher, with 11% of the population affected, highlighting just how significant everyday noise exposure can be for those living in major metropolitan areas.
America's Noisiest Social Cities
To uncover America’s noisiest social cities, we analyzed 50 major US cities, scoring each out of 30 based on three key factors: the number of nightlife venues, live music venues, and sports stadiums with capacities of more than 15,000.
The results reveal where America’s social scene is at its busiest, identifying the cities where nights out, live entertainment, and major sporting events create the loudest social hotspots.
New York City sets the pace
With a perfect 30 out of 30 score, New York City comfortably topped the rankings. Home to 858 nightlife venues, 29 music venues, and 8 major sports stadiums, the Big Apple offers one of the busiest entertainment scenes in the US. Whether it’s catching a Broadway show, seeing a live concert, watching the Yankees under the lights or enjoying the city’s late-night hotspots, there’s no shortage of ways to spend an evening.
Chicago and Los Angeles complete the top three
Chicago (21.63) claimed second place, with Los Angeles (20.38) close behind. While both cities are renowned for their entertainment, each has its own distinct appeal.
Chicago’s vibrant live music scene, iconic sports teams, and packed summer festival calendar make it one of the country’s most iconic social destinations. At the same time, Los Angeles draws crowds year-round with everything from Hollywood premieres and arena concerts to major league games and outdoor events.
The rankings show that some of America’s most exciting places to socialize are also where people are most likely to encounter high levels of recreational noise.

Taking simple steps to protect your hearing and monitoring any changes, such as ringing in the ears or difficulty following conversations, can help identify potential problems before they become more serious.
Methodology:
Using a seed list of the 50 most popular U.S. cities, we analyzed multiple factors to identify where residents are exposed to the highest levels of everyday noise.
The ranking considered population density, traffic congestion, aircraft noise pollution, overall noise and light pollution, the percentage of residents exposed to average daytime transportation noise of 60 dB or higher, and the number of nightlife venues, music venues, and major sports stadiums in each city. The number of residents exposed to average daytime transportation noise of 60 dB or higher was calculated by applying the National Transportation Noise Map’s percentage of residents exposed at this level to each city’s total population, producing an estimated number of affected residents.
