Music has always played a big, vital role in her life.
Julie Slavin, also known as Hesta Prynn, feels really lucky that she gets to do music as her job and how she has followed her dream of becoming a DJ.
In this video, Julie Slavin, also known as Hesta Prynn, talks about her hearing loss journey and her life as a successful DJ. She shares the profound and positive impact her hearing aids have had on her life, both personally and professionally.
She recalled the first time she ever took a hearing test, which was at a nurse’s office when she was five years old. She remembers that once she took the test, she had to go to a hospital where she completed a more complicated hearing test.
In this process, she learned that she had a hearing loss, and the range of human speech wasn’t there. She mentioned how if you’re not going to be able to hear anything, that’s probably the worst thing to not be able to hear.
There are places in life where she feels like she misses out on things that were talked about like at a restaurant or even a party.
This is one of the many reasons why she escaped into music, as it was a place where she could hear everything happening. It was also a way for her to bring this experience of her musical knowledge to people without having to deal with the struggle of missing out.
“Not being able to understand what people are saying, especially people close to you is incredibly isolating and depressing to be truthful,” said Slavin. “And wearing hearing aids has allowed me to stay closer to people; to my friends, to my clients, and especially to my family, my kids.”
Over time, she realized how hearing aids are a tool that helps her stay connected to, which is a big deal for her.

Earlier on within her hearing loss journey, she resisted the idea of getting hearing aids for so long, as she was worried of what other people would think. As time went on, she recognized that she would not let the fear of what other people think affect her. She wanted to be a prime example for her kids and wanted to show that everybody has something.
“Whatever you have that’s different about you, just lean into it. I got hearing aids. I thought to myself that I can do this in a way where I’m embarrassed about it or whatever, or I can just like rock this and make this my thing,” said Slavin.
She chose to rock this. Having hearing aids has had a profound impact on her life, which is now how she relates to her kid. She is so grateful that she is alive at a time where hearing aids exist.
